Integration of the ThirdEye dental cameras

Our ThirdEye dental cameras you can use both in your own dental office, in the dental office of one of your colleagues, at educational training courses or dental congesses in your own country or abroad. All you need is our ThirdEye dental camera set (camera, mini camera stand, cable and connection boxl), some Impregum® for temporary mounting of the miniature camera stand  and some cable ties to fix the camera cable along the dental light linkage. A video monitor (LCD or plasma tv) and/or a video projector should be available anywhere in the´world. If you want to record the live transmission on site, you can use a small and lightweight DVR (=digital video recorder) or a camcorder with an analogue video input (e.g. Canon´s HV10, HV20, HV30)

The whole system easily fits in your hand baggage and doesn´t weigh more than 3 kilograms !

Monitors

If you do not own neither a video monitor nor a tv set in your office yet, you can choose between:

  • a high-quality LCD computer monitor or tv set with a contrast ratio of at least 1.000:1 !

  • a plasma tv set (very good image quality, but only big screen tv´s ( from 30" and up)

  • a professional CRT video monitor (CRT = cathode ray tube) with a resolution of 500 lines or more

  • a video projector monitor

Nearly all dental offices nowadays use computers with LCD computer monitors. Many of these monitors are older models featuring only low contrast ratios. A contrast ratio of 250:1 or 300: 1 might be good enough for your office software, but those monitors are not a good choice for dental imaging ! Besides: The bigger the monitor screen, the higher the contrast ratio.

Where to place the monitor in the surgery ?

The position of the monitor in your surgery depends on your wishes and your requirements. You want to use the monitor to show intraoral details (cavities, bleeding, crowns...) to your patients ? In this case the monitor should be mounted to the dental light tubing  beside the dental chair. If you have enough space on the ceiling above or on the wall opposite the dental chair, then you might decide to buy a big screen LCD or plasma tv . That´s a good idea, if you want to show your patients some DVD videos for relaxation.

Attention: Plasma monitors may not be hung horizontally beneath the ceiling  !

You want to use the monitor merely as your preview monitor during treatments or surgeries ?
In that case we recommend to place the monitor on a cabinet or cart at the rear of the dental chair. Thus both the dentist and his/her dental assistant have the best view during the surgery.

Monitor mountings

There are many possibilities to integrate a monitor in the dental treatment.

  • Wall mount

view according to placement, behind the patient´s head, opposite the patient or lateral of dental chair

  • Ceiling mount ( best view for the patient; show DVD video presentations)

  • Mounted to dental light tubing (perfect view for dentist, assistant and patient)

A good buying source for monitor mounts apart from dental suppliers you can find at www.monitorhalterung.de

Video recordings without computer

To archive your video recordings and photos without a computer you have the following options :

  • DVD recorder with hard disk (= simplest solution for pure documentation).

With a DVD recorder you can record and save high resolution videos. A DVD recorder, which can record in DVD RAM format is the best choice (e.g. Panasonic, JVC). These DCVD RAM media are like hard disks, because you can erase and/or rewrite them nearly 100.000 times. All DVD recorders save an index frame (= photo) each time you push the record button. So you can name that index image later
with your patients name or other names. We recommend to shoot the patients record card for five seconds at the beginning of the recording.

  • DV tape recorder (digital video)

High image quality, more expensive that a DVD recorder and long tape winding times. Professional DV tape recorders by Panasonic,Sony or JVC are very expensive (some € 2.000- € 3.000 A good alternative is the video walkman HD700E by Sony, which can record HD-ready signals and which has a HD-ready monitor, too. (www.sony.de)

  • Digital DV camcorder (with analogue video input)
or modified (Sony only !) Digital8 camcorder (all of them with DV/D8 tapes)

Two years ago Canon came up with the first HDV (HDTV = High Definition) consumer camcorders (Canon HDV10, HDV20, now HDV40) with analogue video inputs. These cameras enable us to recod anaogue vdie signals directly to DV tape. Alternatively you may use a modified Sony Digital8 camcorder (only some Sony Digital 8 camcorders can be modified with analogue inputs). To record on DV or Digital8 recorders or camcorders ist th ebest solution for the latter production of educational videos (on DVD).
Our recommendation: HV20, HV30 or HV40 by Canon with analogue video inputs ! (www.canon.com)

  • DVR Digital video recorder ( with USB port to connect external hard disks)

Originally for video surveillance and recordings in digital satellite or cable receivers. More and more these DVR´s can record high resolution signals from analogue sources like video cameras, too. Most DVR´s record videos with high compression rates using the new H.264 (MPEG-4) codec. But often they only can record VGA resolution videos (640x480). Since the ThirdEye Video dental camera delivers a PAL or NTSC signal with a resolution of 720x576 respectively (NTSC Auflösung) you give away most of the original resolution ! Looking for the newest DVR recorder please "google" for media player or media recorder.

  • D-VHS (digital VHS recorder)

Digital VHS, a format, nearly no one in Europe knows,  has an excellent image quality and is superior the most other digital media recorders.  And you can use old VHS or S-VHS cassettes for your recordings. The capacity of a D-VGS cassette is up to 21 hours. You can save up to 2000 index frames, which facilitates the search for important scenes. Very low sales numbers in Europe did not enhance global distribution of this fantatstic video recorders.

  • Analogue video recorders like VHS or S-VHS recorders are obsolete today

Recordings to compter hard disk or memory card

If you want to connect the ThirdEyevideo dental camera to your computer, view the camera images on a computer monitor and save the recorded videos to hard disk, you´ll need a video (tv) card or a framegrabber card. Good alternatives are external AV-USB adapters or AV-Firewire adapters. These are small format devices, which convert internally the analogue video signal of our ThirdEyeVideo dental camera into a digital signal and send it either via USB (2.0) or via Firewire to the computers hard disk (e.g. Terratec AV Grabster 250MKII or Canopus ADVC55).

Buying a video card or any AV (= audio-visual) adapter, please, pay attention to the video compression format the device uses. A device, which can produce an uncompressed video format or at least an .AVI format should be preferred. We do not recommend video cards or AV adapters, which convert the analogue video signals into a mere DVD (= MPEG-2) signal , because MPEG-2 files are not easy to edit with most video editing softwares.

If you want to capture high definition signals with our ThirdEyeHD dental camera you´ll need a HD-capable video capture card. Ther are not many of these cards available yet. We recommend the Canopus Pegasus card, which reqires a free PCI express slot in your computer (www.canopus.com). Canopus is a branch of Thomson-Grassvalley, a renowned manufacturer of professional broadcast (= television)- and studio equipment.

Foot switches or speech control

If you want to freeze and grab images on your computer monitor on the fly while you are working, you cannot do otherwise but use a footswitch or teach your grabbing or capturing software to react to speech control..

Owners of Macintosh computers will be happy about the convenient speech control of the IMovie software, that comes with every MAC. A lapidary "start" lets IMovie start capturing your video.

Editing and archiving photos

To archive and edit the grabbed photos you´ll need a so-called imaging software, Thee are many dental office softwares, which have an imaging solution included already. Every manufacturer of intraoral cameras supplies such a software, too. An economy-priced alternative for archiving and editing your grabbed images is the ACDSee® software

Editing and archiving videos

There are many video editing softwares on the market. They reach from cheap to very expensive. It´s up to your requirements and your ambition, which one to choose.
Here are only some of the available video editing softwares. Good and cheap choices are Video Studio (Magix) or Vegas Video Studio (Sony), For the professional video editor we recommend Apple´s Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere CS, Canopus Edius or Sony Vegas Pro (which is my favorite). These softwares can fulfill any wish of any editing maniac.
All these editing softwares can capture and record your movies directly to your computers hard disk, which actually is not very convenient, because you have to control the software via mouse or trackball. You must admit, that it is much more convenient just to push the record button of a DVD recorder, a camcorder or a DV recorder to start the recording.

A very cheap shareware to both capture videos and grab photos to hard disk is WinAvi Video Capture (www.winavi.com). This small but mighty software is easy to operate by simulating a virtual video recorder. It doesn´t need nights of training as do the more sophisticted video editing softwares.

  • ThirdEyeHD →  HD recorder, Sony Video Walkman GV-HD700E
or HD capture card (Canopus Pegasus for capturing to hard disk)

Die ThirdEye dental cameras are optimized for dentists and dental surgeons to tape or capture videos easiyl and instantly. If you only want to shoot photos, you better buy a digital still camera with ring flash or lateral flashes and not use an intraoral(video)camera, because video cameras (all intraoral cameras are video cameras !) only have video resolutions (at most 2 Megapixels !)

Please, tell us your wishes and requirements !

We´d love to give you advice.
